Frequently Asked Questions
What is the competition about?
There are two competition categories in Hjólað í vinnuna:
The Workplace Competition, where workplaces compete for the highest ratio of participation days in relation to the total number of employees.
The Kilometre Competition, where teams compete both in total kilometres and average kilometres per team member.
More information can be found under “About Hjólað í vinnuna – Competition Categories.”
What are the prizes?
In the Workplace Competition, recognition plaques are awarded to the top three workplaces in each category based on the highest participation ratio.
In the Kilometre Competition, plaques are awarded to the top three teams for both total kilometres and average kilometres per team member.
How do I register?
To participate, you must be part of a team within your workplace. First check whether colleagues have already registered a team. If so, you can join that team.
If no team exists, you can become the team leader and encourage your colleagues to join.
To register, go to www.hjoladivinnuna.is and click “Nýskráning” (New Registration).
Create your user account, then register your workplace. Enter the workplace ID number (kennitala) and continue. If several workplaces share the same ID number (such as schools within a municipality), you may use your own ID number instead.
Fill in the required information and save. You can then choose to register all employees in a single team or create multiple teams within the workplace.
More details are available under “About Hjólað – How to Register Your Workplace.”
How do I register my team under my workplace AND as a separate workplace within my municipality?
Once the main workplace has been registered along with all its branches nationwide, go to www.hjoladivinnuna.is, begin a new registration, enter the workplace ID number, select your branch location, and complete the registration.
Your team will then appear under the main workplace in the Workplace Competition, and also as an individual workplace under your municipal category.
Note: The workplace and all its branches must be created in the system before you register your team.
How are workplaces ranked?
Workplaces are ranked by the ratio of participation days relative to the total number of employees.
Under “Workplace Ranking,” the categories and current leading workplaces are displayed.
Participation days = total days cycled divided by total number of employees.
Kilometres are displayed the same way, although the kilometre ratio is not a competition category this year.
More details under “About Hjólað – Competition Categories.”
What determines the workplace category?
When registering, you enter the total number of employees at the workplace. That number determines the category. For example, a workplace with 72 employees enters the 70–129 employee category.
How many days may I record?
Each participant may log up to 18 days within the challenge period.
What counts as valid activity?
• All trips to and from work
• Work-related trips that would otherwise be taken by car (meetings, errands), provided a sustainable mode is used
• E-bikes and e-scooters count as valid. Distance must be multiplied by 0.75 before logging.
Example: 3 km × 0.75 = 2.25 km
What does NOT count?
Because the project focuses on commuting habits, the following activities do not count (but can be logged in Lífshlaupið):
• Lunchtime exercise
• Walks or bike rides after arriving home from work
• Movement within the workplace (e.g., walking to deliver mail)
Which employee count should be registered?
Register the number of employees on the payroll at the start of the competition, regardless of employment percentage.
Employees on leave or sabbatical may be excluded.
How do I join the daily registration prize draw?
One winner is drawn every working day during the competition live on Rás 2.
To enter, you only need to be registered for Hjólað í vinnuna.
The main prize is drawn on May 27.
More information is under “Events – Games – Registration Game.”
How do I take part in the photo competition?
Submit a fun photo, video, or short story.
Photos may be submitted via:
• Instagram with #hjolaðivinnuna
• The Hjólað í vinnuna Facebook page
• The official website
Two winners are drawn on Rás 2, and the best photo also receives a special prize from the bike shop Ernir.
How do I take part in the team leader competition?
All team leaders who register a team are automatically entered.
Ten team leaders will win prizes from Reiðhjólaverslunin Ernir.
What rules apply?
Participants are expected to log their activity honestly. Rules are listed under “About Hjólað – Rules.”
Who can participate?
Everyone, as long as they use their own energy to travel to and from work: cycling, walking, running, rollerblading, etc.
Public transport users may also participate by logging the distance walked or cycled to and from the bus stop.
How do I submit a photo through the website?
Go to www.hjoladivinnuna.is → “Events” → “Photo Gallery.”
Click “Click here to upload a photo,” select your photo, add your name, workplace, and team, and submit.
If issues arise, try reducing the image size or email: hjoladivinnuna@isi.is.
How do I submit a story?
Go to www.hjoladivinnuna.is → “Events” → “Stories.”
Click the link to submit your story, fill in your details, and send.
Stories appear under “Stories – 2025” once approved.
How do I join the Kilometre Competition?
During registration, the team leader must tick “Yes, we participate in the kilometre competition.”
If the team is already registered, the team leader may log in later and enable it.
The team will not appear in the rankings until at least 3 members are registered (minimum team size is 3, maximum 10).
Why doesn’t my team appear in the kilometre rankings?
Teams only appear after at least 3 members have been registered.
How is the kilometre ranking calculated?
Teams compete for:
• Total kilometres
• Average kilometres per team member
Average KM = Total KM / number of team members
Prizes are awarded to the top three teams in both categories.
Why can’t all physical activity be logged?
The aim is to promote active, environmentally friendly commuting, so only commuting and work-related trips count.
For general physical activity, participants are encouraged to log that in Lífshlaupið (www.lifshlaupid.is).
How do I delete a team?
Send an email to hjoladivinnuna@isi.is and request that the team be removed.
